Antiques Extravaganza, Past presents vintage goods  1/04/2008

By Rachael Recker of The Grand Rapids Press

GRAND RAPIDS -- Jim Bleeker leaned over the glass counter inside his Eastown book shop and pointed to the behemoth. "We'll bring that one for sure," the owner of Argos Book Shop, 1405 Robinson Road SE, said of the faded-blue exercise in light reading: a 1,426-page "History of Kent County, Michigan, 1881."  All things local are all the rage, according to Bleeker and other area antique dealers who will be at this weekend's Grand Rapids Antiques Market at DeVos Place. The event will feature 100 vendors.  "It's one of the most-sought-after books," he said of the $575 investment. "It's hard to find. It's a very thorough history up until that point."

Bleeker is bringing more than 400 books -- ranging in price from $10 to $575 for the early Michigan history volume -- to the show that proved popular last year, when it was held at Calvin College's Prince Conference Center. Included in the mix is a copy of "Gerald R. Ford," signed by the former president. Besides vintage first editions and signed books of the "interesting and hard-to-find" variety, Bleeker will bring children's books, comics, postcards and general ephemera to the show.

Mike Dykhouse, owner of Eastown Antiques, 1515 Lake Drive SE, is rounding up his store's finer pieces, including a nine-piece Berkey & Gay dining room set he has priced at $2,049. Many of his items will be Michigan-made, he said. "It's just a local thing, people like to have that local connection." ....
